The Hamlets is a powerful insight to the cultural history of Tower Hamlets & in particular, migration to the area over the past 900 years, highlighting the refugee contribution to the growth & richness of the East End of London. This film challenges the perception that London's multi-culturalism has only come about in the past fifty years or so when in fact Tower Hamlets has been a multi-cultural area for hundreds & hundreds of years. The purpose of this piece is to make young people aware and bring alive the history and culture of Tower Hamlets by looking at how the borough has developed over time. In addition the project will provide young people the opportunity to make a piece that they feel will appeal to their peers and others. By doing this they will hopefully become aware that their lives are also an important part of this continuing and forever changing history. The film will be a historical, educational piece about Tower Hamlets and the history of the development of Tower Hamlets. It will be a documentary video piece incorporating drama. The aim is to distribute copies of the film to schools, youth groups and libraries in the area to be used as a tool to introduce young people to the history of the area and hopefully create an interest in the history. The Hamlets has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. |
