Film making in the Middle East and North Africa

Phase 1: Mouth That Roars recently went to the Egyptian Desert and trained a group of young people to make a pilot documentary about their lives, entitled "Our Everyday Lives".

Phase 2: Mouth That Roars aims to return to Egypt, with funding from Salesforce.com, with the footage and a small edit set up, camera, sound and edit equipment. This will enable the young people to continue the film process and make their own films. MTR will take a trained film team to train the young people and their Teacher in using the editing equipment, and in turn they can train other young people.

We also aim to complete the pilot film and part of this second phase will include some more film making that will be added to the pilot to make a completed short film/documentary. Later in the year we hope to move onto phase three, where we return to produce a fictional piece with the young people, however this will need more funds and preparation.

This project is extremely important, as the young people have no access to resources of this kind as we saw from our Phase 1 evaluation and the young people expressed a desire to continue the process.

'Our Everyday Lives Egypt' selected for screening at the Cooperative Young Film Makers Festival Oct 2005. Smiya collects awarded certificate on behalf of Mouth That Roars.

The aim is for the village to have edit/film resources to produce more films to start a network of film exchanges with other countries. Also the sheer film experience and access to technology will aid in education, literacy and development. This will enable an exchange of life experiences that will inspire, motivate, innovate and educate us all. Mouth That Roars aims to carry out similar projects in other countries such as Morocco and Syria.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to give filming access to young people who wouldn't ordinarily have it. To enhance sustainability and broaden the gulf of access globally. To broaden the access to film making and learn about lives from people who have first hand experience of it.

This is a piece of work that invites young people to explore how accurate their stereotypes are and will provoke thinking about global identity, our own and others.

This project will explore the lives of young people living in different countries and cultures across the Middle East/North Africa. Our opinions of culture are generally formed through what we see in the media rather than from our own experiences.

Mouth That Roars team that are involved in this project are fully trained in delivering projects of this nature. The Young people in Egypt will have a high quality experience with our team and will also keep full dialogue open when we return to the UK. The young people can email us with any queries and in addition when appropriate we will return to up date software etc.
